Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement response to the Sichuan earthquake
The Red Cross and Red Crescent response to the earthquake that shook Sichuan province on 12 May is led by the Red Cross Society of China with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
A joint assessment team composed of the Chinese Red Cross, the Hong Kong Red Cross and the International Federation has arrived in Sichuan on May 13. Working with the Sichuan Red Cross branch, the team participated in Red Cross relief operations at Dujiangyan and Beichuan counties, situated in the most affected areas. In addition to this, six Red Cross emergency first aid teams from different parts of China have arrived in the affected areas and are taking part in the massive rescue operation.
According to the team, the most urgently needed relief items in the affected areas currently are tents, medical supplies, drinking water, food, plastic sheeting as well as disinfectants, waste collection and water purification material.
